Gen3, Gen4, Gen5: what your NVMe drive is, and what it pays
NVMe drives are priced by capacity, whatever their PCIe generation. A 512GB NVMe drive pays $25 today, a 1TB $62 and a 2TB $112. Every size is on the M.2 price table.
The three generations
- PCIe 3.0 (Gen3). Tops out around 3,500 MB/s sequential read. Drives such as the Samsung 970 EVO Plus, WD Blue SN570 and Crucial P3.
- PCIe 4.0 (Gen4). Up to about 7,000–7,450 MB/s at the top end. The Samsung 980 PRO and 990 PRO, WD_BLACK SN850X and Kingston KC3000.
- PCIe 5.0 (Gen5). Upwards of 10,000 MB/s, such as the Crucial T700.
Generation shows up in a drive’s speed, not its trade-in value here: a Gen3 and a Gen5 drive of the same size get the same offer. CrystalDiskInfo on Windows shows it as the Transfer Mode, for example “PCIe 4.0 x4”.
Is NVMe the same as M.2?
No. M.2 is the shape of the stick and NVMe is how it talks to the computer. Most M.2 drives made in recent years are NVMe, but older ones can be SATA. Both sell through the M.2 option in the form, by capacity. NVMe also comes in the 2.5-inch U.2 shape used in servers — see the enterprise SSD page.

An NVMe drive can be securely erased with its maker’s tool or a sanitize command, usually in minutes; our wipe guide walks through each option. Worn drives price lower — check its health first if you are curious.
